Poetics Presents

Maxine Staley

Maxine Staley is a great-grandmother who now has time for her many interests; painting, music, genealogy, and writing. WVU is helping her learn more about writing and she is meeting wonderful people with similar interests who willingly share their knowledge and talents.

Writers' Village members look forward to reading more of Maxine's work.

An Invitation

Soft music of wind chimes as the breeze
ripples through the pin oak's sunlit leaves.
It's heavy-laden branches, cascade
gracefully to the ground,
a sparkling green waterfall.

Rain Crow calls forlornly from a distance.
Two doves perched on the slanted rooftop,
bask in the sun, sentinels on guard.
Blue Jay on high board fence, watches
Robin bounce to land and run in search of food.

My dog, She-She, at my feet, gets up,
smells white clover blossoms mingled with grass
along a half hidden stepping stone walk, finds
a snail. Dog sniffs cautiously, snail retracts.
She-She loses interest.

Mimosas blossoms, pink and yellow, atop fernlike leaves,
A few red roses linger, orange lilies in full bloom.
Small green table with umbrella shade,
lawn chairs near the gas grill,
invite you to join me on the patio.
