Artificial Silence

We mask the sound
of conscience
with white noise-
the hum of fan,
gurgle of brook,
radio songs,
rainforest sounds-
anything to keep
from hearing
the ebb and flow of breath
the rhythm of the heart
the voices in our heads

There is no such thing
as silence
